I think it's good they ask for volunteers. I think it's a good business case to offer people to stay longer and get more people to their destination that really have to be there in time, while making money at the same time. But as always: the implementation could be improved. Either be more specific, or make sure the customer understands that, if he checks this box, he will be made an offer at boarding time that he then can accept or decline.

sorry to hear that.. at the end it depends on the gate agent i guess ..
when I volunteer i get the feeling that I do the favor to the airline , not the other way around
on OS they always offer the 250e (for an intra-european flight) ..and later flights are also convenient with the LH network (or even code share partners that are not in star alliance , once they rebooked me on tarom and i got home the same day).. and even the over night stays in vienna in those 4* hotels are enjoyable
