pinniped,
Maybe you could enlighten us to what secrets the concierge divulged on the Hana Road Trip. I will be there in December and have read a few things about the Road to Hana and am interested in driving it.
Thanks

Nothing terribly secret...
- He loaned us a Guide CD. Without it, we wouldn't have gotten as much out of the drive. Aside from the main tourist highlights, the CD explains some optional side trips off of the main highway, describes less-obvious hikes to pools, and gives good ideas for picnic spots.
- He convinced us to get started about 2 hours before we thought we should have. The key if you are in a regular rental car is to get out ahead of the tourist vans and buses that make the trip every day. Because we were ahead of them, we rarely encountered slow traffic and we were able to spend plenty of time visiting the sights without crowds. We swam in two different secluded pools along the way completely by ourselves.
- He gave us his tips on where to get a good sandwich. (I forget the name of the place - it was a provision store in the last town before you start the road to Hana.)
- He loaned us a styrofoam cooler.
