I did almost that exact vacation last year: ALON at HWV and a few nights at Renaissance Wailea. You will enjoy the fact that they are on two different islands (although it sounds like you might be an unexpected 5000 FF miles lighter ) because both islands are awesome in very different ways!

The Marriott Wailea is the old Outrigger hotel. I'm not familiar with it, but the Marriott board should have good details - search there for "Wailea" and get reviews on both properties (Outrigger and Renaissance). The Ren Wailea is a perfect "couples" hotel: small, quiet, elegant, and beautifully maintained. Outriggers tend to be larger, less elegant (still nice), but sometimes run more activities directly from the hotel and have larger pools and things for kids to do. If you are looking for the intimate experience but also like activities, consider the Renaissance: it's walking distance (or a 2 minute drive) to the Outrigger/Marriott.

HWV, of course, is like Disneyland without the mouse.

We loved both Ren Wailea and HWV and hope to someday go back. Both properties are definitely in the "nice resort" class.
