Not sure you can use BA Avios miles to upgrade AA metal flights. Whose matrix were you consulting? Also was the flight booked and ticketed on AA.com or 001 ticket stock?

For the moment the best you can hope for as a BA Silver is to request seating in the MCE part of the the coach cabin where there's extra pitch and if on the 77W, a small private cabin separated from the rest of coach.
