+1. In fact, many algorythms (and I think that this includes AF) give some "points" for early check in among the many tie-breakers used to decide upgrade pecking order. On the other hand, not checking in makes you a priority to be demoted to standby if flight is truly oversold across classes and there isn't enough room for everyone.
