I thought (and did) the same thing for my first Plat status - it's exactly the same requirements as the general program. Although I suppose the difference is that they don't advertise the challenge on the SPG website, so I expect this to generate more knowledge of it.
As with other shortcuts (Zone 2 for credit card holders), I hate the thought it could throw even more people into Gold and Plat status. But then again, I'm biased
I wish it was similar to the Emirates & Delta partnerships with SPG, where we'd get crossover miles from each.
