What Happened to Renting a Clean Car?

Is it just me, or have the US-based Avis rentals been dirtier than ever? I generally rent a vehicle 75 days in the US and another 75-125 overseas, generally all through Avis.

Over the last few years, I've been noticing a decline in the cleanliness of the vehicle; mostly the interior. Last week at DCA, I was given a Nissan Maxima that only had 4K miles on it, but the inside was trashed. The seats and carpets were heavily stained and there was spilled coffee residue all over the center console. I notified the Preferred desk, in which they promptly apologized, and claimed I shouldn't of had the car anyway, as they had an upgrade available. The upgrade was an Infiniti QX50. Even when getting into the QX50, the driver's cockpit was clean, but the back seats and floor were dirty, full of crumbs and little paper bits. I figured, screw it, I'm not sitting back there anyway.

My list could go on and on, but it's just disappointing to rent a dirty car, especially if you're going to have passengers. A lot of times, it's really not worth the complaint, but it just had me wondering about the Avis experience as a whole.

Am I just on a string of bad luck with Avis, or are the cars we're renting just not being cleaned the same anymore? ...and yes, I'm sure we, as human beings, can be rather disgusting with the things we do (and bring) into the rental car.
