Yes, generically, flights are held for connections, but it's a hit or miss proposition, some times it makes situations better for travelers as a whole, sometimes it makes it worse.
I disagree with you here, I've NEVER had a flight held for misconnects. Even EWR-DUB pushed off 5 minutes early when my LAX connecting flight was late. 17 pax were on that connection, and we were all at the gate 5 minutes after scheduled departure...no it was not held.
