What are you dates? Are you booking first class which requires 3X avios? Can you post a screenshot?
I can duplicate the 30,000 avios per person one way if I pick a connecting flight option involving a US flight CLT-SDF connecting to an AA flight SDF-ORD. This will price as 30,000 avios because it involves two partners and prices as a multi-partner award flight.

I see what your problem might be, you are probably combining a US flight one direction with an AA flight the other direction. As this involves two partners it prices as a multi-partner award which uses the separate pricing table above. Indeed this is the problem as I was just able to duplicate it. OP your remedy is to book the outbound and inbound as separate redemptions or stick solely to AA or US if booking as a return.
