It's actually becoming more of a problem in many areas of the world, even if it isn't in Europe. There are 4 major LTE bands in the US, none of which overlap with bands used in Europe, with more coming online as spectrum gets auctioned.
Also, saying a phone supports 700 MHz is a bit misleading, as there are different bands in the upper and lower halves of the spectrum, so a phone that supports bands 12 and 17 may not support 13 and 14.
