Also, I'd recommend going in the middle of the week, as the city can become quite a tourist nightmare.
If you do see KRK, then heed this advice. The motorway from Wrocław to Kraków is efficient, 130km/h, and more or less cheap. The train is differentially cheaper and slooooow.

If you do want to do a daytrip, drive and you'll come in from the north-west and my advice at that point would be to drive straight into the city and park at Galeria Krakowska/Dworzeć PKP (past the airport, exit right onto 7, Exit right again onto Aleja 29 Listopada, Exit right onto the ramp at Czestawa Miłosza, First exit at the roundabout up to the parkade). From there you can walk to the old town or take the #50/51 tram over to Kazimierz (stop at Miodowa and you're basically there). Don't drive in Kraków. At least, don't drive to anywhere you want to go, except possibly Schindler's Factory. And of course drive to Wieliczka. Kraków traffic is best avoided, although getting to/from the main station can be quite smooth, with the most likely bottleneck being Al. 29 Listopada. IMO.
