I think where you're staying is right by the city of Kłodzko (which used to be the German city of Glatz). It was a fortress town with the original fortress still in place. So it makes for a nice day trip. Also, the city of Jelenia Góra (Hirschberg in German) is not that far away. It was one of very few cities in Lower Silesia to not have suffered war damage in 1945. And is one of the very few German cities left in its original architectural form (although now in Poland). Also, one of the oldest spas in Poland sits adjacent to the city, called Cieplice. Swidnica is not that far away. (Kind of in the middle from from where you're staying and Wrocław. Nice architecture. Basically no damage from the war either.

If you don't want to hire a car, the regional train for Lower Silesia (Koleje Dolnośląskie) is very inexpensive and they use nice modern trains. I believe their website is kolejedolnoslaskie.eu

If you do decide to visit Kraków (for the day), I would probably hire a car. Even though it's not that far, the train journey will take forever. You'd probably have to take the train from Kłodzko up to Opole and then transfer onto one of the Wrocław-Kraków trains. Also, I'd recommend going in the middle of the week, as the city can become quite a tourist nightmare.

OH!! I almost forgot. When you take money out of an ATM in Poland, you will most likely be asked if you want the "fixed" exchange rate shown on the screen. It will tell you how much that transaction will be in the local currency of you bank account. DO NOT ACCEPT IT AND DECLINE IT. Even after you decline it, the ATM will ask if you are you sure you want to do that, as it cannot guarantee the transaction rate (or wording to that effect). In fact, for amusement, write down the amount which it offered you; and then compare it to what your bank actually deducted from your account. You'll notice a difference of about 7-8% in your favor. Of course, many banks have jacked up their fees for an out-of-network ATM withdrawal. But that would still happen if you choose the fixed exchange rate as well.
