It wouldn't work at T3 or T5 at LHR: you have to have an entry in Ready to Fly or Positive Boarding to get through security, and if you don't do that by the deadline the seats can be released for standby passengers. In that scenario, a pair of unused seats are more likely to be reassigned than a random middle towards the back of the aircraft.
Yeah, I guess AMS's unique transit structure makes it very suitable for this strategy.
It's also unnecessary on BA: you can get a cheap-ish "comfort seat" in economy by paying for it.
Not the same as 3 seats in a row though.
