My wife is supportive if this is something I wish to do but with a 1 year old at home i'm a little nervous about being away for potentially weeks at a time (even if its only a once a quarter trip).

Thanks.
What is your work/life balance like now? If you have long work days/long commute, and don't see much of your child Mon-Fri anyway, then the 50-60% of the time that you'll be wfh will massively increase your contact with your kid.

I run my own (small) company, and wfh mostly with typically one week away every three/four weeks. Yes, being away can be tough, but when I'm at home I take the boys to school most mornings - and many of their classmates don't see their dads at all during the week, leaving home before 7 and getting home after 8.

This is the key. Make really sure that she understands the pros and cons, and is she is supportive, you'll be fine.
