I think some people who aren't good with technology legitimately do not understand that Facetime/Hangouts/Skype can be used in "normal phone mode" as you would for any voice call and not just video+speaker. All of my colleagues have iPhones and we get quite miserly roaming packages so I always FaceTime when abroad if possible, but not on speaker!
