MSPEconomist is right. "R" is what you book into when you upgrade (internationally at least) using miles + money. You will get miles and PQD's based on your original fare paid, not on the upgrade. The extra money paid also doesn't count toward PQD's.

I asked UA the specific question about the money counting towards the PQD and got a different reply. Email is posted below (with person info stripped out.) Did I not ask the right question? Hope that I'm correct and you are not but given UA, I fear differently.

Per our Mileage Plus Department, dollars spent count toward your premier qualifying requirement if upgrade is obtained at time of ticket purchase with qualifying fare. If upgrade is purchased after original ticket purchase dollars spent do not count.
