I think until fairly recently it was assumed with delayed flights you should get to airport by the original check-in time. Leaving it later was at your own risk. Thankfully BA are making life much easier in this situation with SMS texts. I received one last month when I already knew the incoming aircraft was delayed, and appreciated not having to get to the airport at an obviously unrealistic time.
Yup, stayed at the Hilton PEK and watched the monitor in the hotel telling me about the delay. Turned up 2 hours before the new ETD and BA desks had closed. Was very lucky to get on that flight, especially being PEK.
