A couple of times in the past when I was protected on a later flight, the DM agent asked me to call and let them know if I made my original flight. When I expressed surprise and asked "don't you know if I made it?" she said that yes, they'd know eventually, but it might take considerable time. Both situations were really chaotic weather days.
