I think until fairly recently it was assumed with delayed flights you should get to airport by the original check-in time. Leaving it later was at your own risk. Thankfully BA are making life much easier in this situation with SMS texts. I received one last month when I already knew the incoming aircraft was delayed, and appreciated not having to get to the airport at an obviously unrealistic time.
