Big city hotels will give you a standard room. Upgrading would be the standard Marriott protocol as if you were paying for it as a Plat- C Lounge access or "maybe" a larger room (but not a suite)

some hotels have an upcharge when using points that allows you to pay cash in addition to the points to get a guaranteed upgrade - junior suite, executive king etc. you would see it when you booked on line
