Car sounds very unappealing for an overnighter! Think I'll try the bus/shuttle option from airport then compare with taxi to get back to airport.

Thanks for the accommodation advice. I know a couple of people in Melbourne so might be able to talk them into meeting at a bar or wherever. Great cocktails are my favourite. Very hard to find places that do them well.
