Is there an NZ flight ? I would have thought it likely that one Star Alliance carrier might well check bags through to another Star Alliance carrier and allow you to avoid having to clear immigration at all
If you have a biometric passport , you can use the self service immgration with a US passport. Do make sure to have a visa for Australia
