There was no option to do paid upgrade on the phone, at the kiosk, or on the website when I checked my wife in, and the MVPG agent couldn't process a paid upgrade on the phone when she suggested it as an option. At the gate there was never an announcement by the gate agents of the ability to do a paid upgrade if someone wanted one.

I don't see how those 6 seats went as paid upgrades if the option to do so wasn't made available anywhere?
