I gave Amtrak a second chance. Flew to LAX on Friday so I could take the train back to Austin. Amtrak fare was $739 for a bedroom.
Train departed on time. Food was nice but the lady serving (dining car) asked me to pay for (someone else's) food at both breakfast and lunch despite having taken down my sleeper details five minutes prior.
Nice scenery during the Saturday.
Sunday morning: woken at 05:50am by the sleeper attendant saying that the service is cancelled at San Antonio, buses would be here to take us away at 06:40 and breakfast would be provided on the bus.
It is now 07:52 and the bus has not departed. I'm looking forward to breakfast as I am really hungry.
Interested in how Amtrak handles this. I don't think I've got my money's worth.
