Good Point, example the Value Jet Miami fire. Aircraft could not even get to any airport to land just after take off.
Air Canada 797 is another good example. Although they did manage to land in CVG I believe one of the contributing factors to the fatalities after landing was that they spent too long in the air trying to diagnose the problem instead of just putting it on the ground immediately and letting the fire brigade deal with it.
