You're getting that absurd price because the itinerary you chose uses more than one BA partner. (Multi-partner awards cost much, much more.)

An award using a single partner costs far less. (Annoyingly, BA still treats US and AA as separate partners, IIRC.) You may be able to avoid the multi-partner surcharge by booking one-way tickets instead of a roundtrip.
