It is not just the money but someone unauthorized entering the room and violating your trust.

OP - You are very lucky the hotel took responsibility and so quickly. I would like to know the hotel just because it says a lot about that hotel and that chain that they didn't make your life miserable while solving the crime. You ask what to do, Mules has a good idea. IMHO in this increasingly insane world, especially with money so tight in almost every country, we need to be a bit more paranoid in protecting our selves and our stuff. Some of us have traveled for so many decades and over so many millions of miles that we aren't always paying attention properly.
PacSafe is a great product. You can hide that under the bed attached to the frame, or find another stationary object that would be hard for a thief to disassemble without bringing attention to themselves. You can also hang it inside a Scott e Vest inside the closet, inside another jacket, with the cable through a sleeve and over the hangar bar. (Check to make sure the bar isn't easily removed.) I'm fond of the DesignGo Wallet as well

When I was in South Korea recently, on one occasion, I had a DesignGo wallet clipped inside my belt at the small of my back and one in the front where I could reach easily. The rest of the time I either wore a Scott e Vest or
Scott e Jacket and had some cash in a front pants pocket so I wouldn't have to show where everything was in public. But I carried everything with me - passport, cash, two wallets. The secret I guess is to pack light, leave valuables at home, and find wearable security devices so you don't need to use the safe. My Scott e Vest even has a pocket for my iPad.
