I agree that it is a little strange that they do not follow the windows standards for the Maximize button. You can however, move the window to the upper left and use the lower right corner to drag the window larger. It should retain the size for when you launch the application again.
On Macs you can only resize the window using the lower right corner, where on Windows you can resize using any of the edges.
