I think they still mean a machine in a ticket office. Either that or it's a translation issue. On the French site it says the
code secret will be requested, but that's only for PIN cards. And even with US cards that have a PIN, there's no code. Trust me, they will happily accept your chip-less card. And I do this every other week, so I can tell you there's no new change as of last week. And I'm registered to get updated about every little change with SNCF.
Also when I log into my SNCF account, one of my registered credit cards is my US Starwood Amex which does not have a chip, nor PIN.
