Maybe they don't trust customers to put in the right batteries? I'm not sure all electronics are built with the tolerance to handle both 1.2V NiMH and 1.5 Alkaline batteries. I'm also positive that people would put non-rechargeable batteries in and plug in their unit, mischarging and leading to leakage or worse...
