I was able to cancel an award ticket earlier thus year within 24 hours of booking and which was within 72 hours of departure when booked. The 24 hour rule trumped the 72 hour rule and all miles were redeposited and taxes and fees refunded. I did this by phone with the Diamond line. I don't believe it was due to Diamond status but I didn't ask.
