A less drastic shot is to download Explorer again before you restore your system.

If restore doesn't work, as an interim measure you can download Netscape Navigator and use that as your browser for searches.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I tried to download / re-install Internet Explorer but

Setup cannot continue</font>
No luck there.

As far as Netscape is concerned, I have tried using the various search engines on that browser as well, and I register the same problems.

I have not performed a system restore yet, and am admittedly a little hesitant to do so, but if that is the only alternative left, I can either do that, or perform searches on some of the other search engines that I am able to do searches on (like Alta Vista), though I don't understand how I am able to do so on those but not others.
