Beware the new Dell Inspiron 5100
After buying a new Toshiba 5305-S503 in December of 2002 and going through 4 hard drives in 5 months (now in the process of getting the entire unit replaced), I decided this unit wasn't reliable (around the time of HDD crash #3) and decided to get a new Dell Inspiron. I configured it the way I wanted and ordered it. The unit came in, worked great except for one problem: it comsumes 90 watts of power. This is fine until you go to purchase an air/auto power adapter for it...which neither Targus or Lind will make, as most airline power outputs are 75w max. Dell finally conceded that this was a huge engineering mistake and accepted the unit for return. If you're planning an ew laptop and use air/auto power, forget this one!
Am now back to square one on laptop hunts, so if anyone has any ideas for a hardcore user...
