Delay w/missed connection, hotel responsibility?

Hi,

My cousin and his family (5 people) were travelling on AA 2285 tonight on a MCO-JFK-AUH-KHI itinerary. The first leg is operated by AA and the second two by EY. The ticket is AA.

Upon arriving at MCO they were informed that AA2285 was delayed, causing a misconnect with their JFK-AUH flight. The AA staff at MCO are telling them the delay is because of weather.

I called the EP desk to rebook them and the agent on the phone confirmed the delay was definitely because of crew. She suggested the protocol is for ground staff at JFK to offer vouchers, but that she couldn't do anything over the phone, and they'd have to get to JFK and figure things out. The next flight out that has room for 5 is in 24 hours.

What happens when the cause of a delay is ambiguous? What responsibility does AA have for the misconnect?
