From an expense perspective at some point a seat just becomes hard to justify costwise and I think that is part of why US carriers generally don't offer a true premium economy product - they rightly fear that it would cannibalize their business class sales if there was a "good enough" option available between coach and business.
And that may be signally a return to 2 class service instead of 3. Make Business more luxurious but not all the wasted space of First.
