So UA has gogo on the PS product. For the rest, it's a crap shoot. We all tend to agree gogo is best if paid up front. I bought a full year gogo plan on all airlines and, while I have the same gripes as anyone about the peaks and troughs of the service, at least I though I didn't get ripped off for what I spent, in the final analysis.

In truth, probably the final thing that "broke" me on staying loyal to United Airlines was the stupidity of not having my full year prepaid gogo work on their planes.

I had been top tier (1K equivalent) for decades, and so had my wife. So this year, I'm down to Plat (lifetime 2mm) and will have only 20K total miles. Almost unbelievable. But what really sealed it (gogo was just the last straw) was the absolute consistently poor service on UA throughout last year and this year. Cancelled flights, delayed flights, mechanical delays, no help in getting me anywhere. It broke me.

Back to topic: UA's inconsistent internet flight designations was unwise. Helped me make up my mind, though, on giving up on the airline. Not easy to do, since I'm living near their SFO hub, but dadgummit, I gave it all to DL, and now I'm a diamond.
I can see retaining the gogo on the p.s. planes since it was already installed on such, at least until the rest of the fleet is done.

The advantage to the Ka/Ku system is that the Ku system is available over water and internationally. Not being up on the technology side of it, I don't see the advantage to either gogo or aka. As long as UA needed the Ku to go international, and since they manage that themselves, they should have put the Ka on the UX planes, and then changed the p.s. birds to either Ka or Ku. Then the entire fleet could be managed by UA and they could offer both entire flight packages and/or hourly passes.

What I'm curious about is why they installed Ka on the non-DTV 737-900s rather than installing Ku. They fly outside of the continental US limits quite often, but that's for a different thread.
