Depending on where you live you could get DSL or ADSL instead. Basically, broadband over your phone line. it's an 'always on' connection just like cable modems are and it would save you from the temptation to watch all that evil cable stuff...

btw, my building is the only one in my area that doesn't have cable. I see enough of it anyway in hotels.
