Echo above - below purely my thoughts, YMMV

- never for LH Y on BA unless very short notice and the cash alternative is astronomical (want to travel Y to LAX tomorrow, returning Wednesday? £2.2k on BA may make Avios look tempting! Though other airlines are available...)

- I don't indulge myself, but LH Y on partners is not always terrible value, 60k Avios and £157 r/t for HKG on CX is probably north of 0.5p per Avios most of the time

- shorthaul redemptions can be great value (I love my 8,000 Avios and £27 returns to DUB, but not if plans are certain and £80 cash return available)

- upgrades can be nice from WT+ to CW (even with the increases recently), turn WT+ ex DUB to DEL to CW for £50 and Avios (I used a GUF, but principle holds I think)

- partner awards where they don't levy fuel surcharges, massively increased cost recently, but can still be decent (90k and £27 for HKG-LHR on CX)
