Again, I know OP is on UA- and my comment made it sound like an non LCC might be better...Im asking as I want to know if AUS is grossly different that elsewhere in the world
Much the same in Oz as US and common sense generally prevails on QF with staff having greater flexibility when pax have more commercial value. QF has taken care of me many times on separate tickets (including non-QF tickets) when QF flight delay caused a mis-connect. But some LCCs, including Jetstar, will be less flexible, and not all pax will get mis-connects taken care of. So the risk is tangible and for the OP, quite high.
