Good points above. If you book with an LCC (low cost carrier) they will not be very flexible nor helpful. As number 6 points out, you are on UA and they have no relationships within australia.
All the main airlines in Australia (QF,VA,JQ,TT) all have the same policy for an no-show on an non-flexible ticket. That being your ticket becomes invalid; and you'll need to purchase on at the going rate.
