I think the 90 day limit might apply to Schengen and not just Italy. So be sure to spend some weekends outside of the Schengen area and get that passport stamped. Keep receipts to prove it too. If you'll be renting lodging in Italy for over 90 consecutive days (including the weekends you spend elsewhere), you might need the visa.
