I'm in the exact situation you mention, currently UA Gold, but because *A premium economy is now fairly common and quite pleasant, I'm switching most of my international travel away from UA J to *A PE.

Since I may not make Gold next year, and PE rarely comes with lounge access, the UC reciprocal privileges suit me perfectly.
