According to FAs (that was a year+ ago, though, not sure if it's still so anymore) it was done out of Atlanta even for flights departing from Japan, which is why they cautioned against the Japanese meal, which is rather soggy and not nearly as good as it used to be anymore (esp. now that it's all served on a single tray, with considerably cut down variety and amount vs. before). That may have been short lived, though, but supposedly so it was about a year or thereabout ago (if one is to trust FAs).
