It is really quite off-putting dealing with a business that seems to have a deeply ingrained culture of "We can get away with screwing yet a bit more out of you -- so we will." Every time I think I've plumbed the depths of BA's shark-like practices, I stumble on something else.

nux's answer, the surcharge on an award ticket is the same as the surcharge on a cash ticket in the same cabin. Whatever the merits of the policy to divide BA's portion of a cash ticket between base fare and carrier surcharge, the higher surcharge for tickets starting in the US hasn't been arbitrarily and exclusively imposed in order to "screw a yet a bit more out of" those redeeming for tickets starting in the US. And this has been the case for a long time now.
