As odd as this story sounds, let's say a GA or check-in agent was hocking the card. If they sold someone on the card by offering to hold a reservation which involved travel that was close-in, that would be pretty low.

OP, perhaps some additional context:

Who was the DL person (gate agent, phone agent, ticket counter agent, red coat, etc.)? When did you submit the application and when was the travel for?
