I find it hard to believe that AA themselves would give him 50k miles. My Hilton Citi card was declined once at a foreign Hilton location. I tried to get Citi to give me some points afterwards since I had to charge the room to my DL AMEX instead. No such luck. I never thought to ask Hilton directly.
