Well, for anyone who does primarily NAmerican or even domestic Canada, the changes to Aeroplan make it far more attactive to just get Elite, then do transborder and even some overseas flying with AA or NW to earn mid-level a status, and lounge benefits for either oneworld or skyteam [which NW will be in soon enough]. NW may be a better deal if you have an Amex Plat card since Worldclub access is part of the Plat package [and the booze is free vs AAdmiral Clubs].

I cannot see any rationale for using UA [and US] in the states just to get MP PremEx and STARGold along with Elite.

The AA changes are attractive, and I believe those who have a current elite status but who did not fly enough Q-miles in 2003 can purchase a one-year extension provided they have at least half the Q-miles required for the tier they are going after.

Another option if one is going to be flying NW, is the final few days on offer of the Alaska status match should you be Elite or SE on AC. Apparently Alaska elites get upgrade benefits on NW, and with the Plat Amex card one gets NW lounge access, so seems like a possible middle alternative if mileage and alliance links are not the primary consideration.

Will AC match the transborder offers? Seems odd if they do, particularly when they are planning to reduce mileage granted on discounted fares. But what at Aeroplan these days does make sense?
