1) If you booked your flights
after your company approved your leave, they should totally compensate you if they asked you to cancel.
2) Mention during the hiring / interview process that you have an upcoming pre-planned, pre-booked, pre-paid holiday. Employers that aren't as$holes will normally accomodate this.
