I bought a Toshiba MK4018GAS.
Instructions are available from
Nomadness. Specifically, I followed the
Easy Way directions.
Those directions skimp on the "opening the Jukebox" step, but it's actually pretty simple -- there are 5 screws on the bottom of the Jukebox. 2 of them are under the rubber feet at the "front", 3 are in the battery compartment (one of them hidden by a sticker). Once the back cover is off, carefully lift the board out, flip it over, and you'll find 4 screws holding the hard drive to the system board. Remove these and slide the drive off, being careful to retain the spacers that hold the drive away from the board. The new drive slides right in.
I found the procedure incredibly simple, but I've done all sorts of things along these lines in the past.
Ob.disclaimer -- opening a Nomad will void any remaining warranty, could damage it, blah blah blah...
I'm still thinking about what to do with the "spare" laptop drive I have now.
This is one possibility, if I can find a retailer selling the "driveless" version.
