Never flown them international but was always able to get emergency exit seats at the airport without surcharge on my domestic flights.
You're going to get charged $100 if you want to select a seat in the front HALF of the cabin even in a crappy middle seat.

Best bet is to take a seat in the back and revise to an exit row at check-in for no additional.
